“Hita ahitam sukham dukham ayu tasya hita ahitam
Maanam cha tat cha yatroktham Ayurveda sah uchyatae”
(Charaka Samhitha)
What is Ayurveda
Ayurveda is made up of two
Sanskrit words: (Ayu+Veda)
‘Ayu’ which means life and ‘Veda’ which means the knowledge of. To know
about life is Ayurveda.
Thus ayurveda is more than
just a medical system. It is a Science of Life.
DEFINITION OF AYURVEDA
“Hita ahitam sukham dukham ayu tasya hita ahitam
Maanam cha tat cha yatroktham Ayurveda sah uchyatae”
(Charaka Samhitha)
ü The science which describes the beneficial and non-beneficial,
happy and unhappy states of life, things good and bad for life, the measurement
of the above said factors and the life itself is called Ayurveda.
ü
The
knowledge contained in Ayurveda deals with the nature, scope and purpose of the
life, Ayurveda embraces the metaphysical and physical, health and disease,
happiness and sorrow, pain and pleasure.
ü Ayurveda is that which deals with Ayu (life) or promotes life-span.
ü Ayurveda is that which deals with good, bad, happy and unhappy
life, its promoters and non-promoters, span and nature.
Why Ayurveda?
The
World Health Organization has reported that in fifty years all the organisms,
which are currently sensitive to the existing antibiotics, will become resistant.
Thus the way of Ayurveda shows wisdom, as it is impossible to have drugs to
kill all the harmful organisms, but instead the answer lies in strengthening
the immunity of the individual to deal with the problems effectively.
It focuses on establishing
and maintaining balance of the life energies within us, rather than focusing on
individual symptoms.
Highlights of ayurveda
ü 100% natural, thus very minimal/no side
effects.
ü
Completely cures the root cause of disease, thus prevents
reoccurrence.
ü The only science which not only deals with the
curing and prevention of the disease, but also helps in preservation of
health.
ü Ayurveda is fast & cost effective treatment
when whole treatment time and cost is taken in account.
ü
Ayurveda treats the person as a whole and not a single
disease.
Goal/Aim of ayurveda
The
aim of this system is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve life. This
can be summed up as follows:
·
To protect health and prolong life ("Swasthyas swasthya
rakshanam")
·
To eliminate diseases and dysfunctions of the body ("Aturasya
vikar prashamanamcha")
Ayurveda provides
both curative and preventive measures towards optimal physical, mental and
spiritual well-being.
In Ayurveda the whole life’s
journey is considered to be sacred.
Thus goal of life is true
freedom from death and disease; enjoyment of uninterrupted physical, mental,
and spiritual happiness and fulfillment. But you stand to lose your ability to
enjoy life if you overindulge, and disease is one of nature’s way of saying you’ve overindulged.
Either you limit yourself or Mother Nature
will limit you.
Definition of health in ayurveda
A healthy
person is, "he whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good,
all tissues of the body and all natural urges are functioning properly, and
whose mind, body and spirit are cheerful."
Thus ayurveda
definition of health comprises all the aspects of WHO definition of health,
which states that –
‘Health
is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity.’
