History of Ayurveda

History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago, widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world.
Ayurveda deals with the entire creation with special emphasis on the biology of life. Since life is always existent in this world in one or other form, so is truth of ayurveda.
Ayurveda is derived from the most sacred scriptures from India, known as Vedas. They are Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharva Vedas.
Ayurveda is considered to be one of the derivatives of the ‘Atharva Veda’ and was passed down to us in form of ‘sutras’ or small phrases written in the form of poetry.

According to “The Charak Samhita”, the oldest known and most trusted treatise on Ayurveda, the story runs this way -
Fifty eminent sages gathered together on the slopes of Himalaya to discuss how to get rid of the common diseases which were causing so much ill health among human beings and interfering in the performance of their duties. It was concluded to approach lord Indra (lord of immortals) who had learned the healing science from Ashwini Kumaris (twin physicians of the gods) who in turn learnt Ayurveda from the creator of universe lord Brahma. Sage Bharadwaja volunteered to go to lord Indra, which proved to be most beneficial.
More or less similar versions are given in other text as well. Just the way Apollo and Troth revealed the Greek and Egyptians system of medicine to their respective people, so also lord Brahma to Indians.

The disciples are categorized in two viz. Charaka School and Dhanwantari School catering to medical and surgical school of thoughts primarily.

No doubt Ayurveda was originated in India sub-continent, as the texts clearly indicate so. Without giving significance to its mythological origin we see that the science endeavored in these classics is worth and recognized with its due respect to its application, theories, treatments, results and as the whole science.
